Rick Perry has been running a new ad in Iowa entitled “Strong,” which has garnered one of the largest YouTube dislike-to-like ratios that this humble blogger has ever seen. Let’s break it down line by line, shall we?
I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m a Christian…
Where in America, exactly, would you feel pressured to not call yourself a Christian? I find this rather explicit claim of Christian victimization largely unconvincing. On both sides of the aisle, what politician today shies away from religion? Unfortunately, rhetorical Tebowing is quite commonplace in today’s political milieu. In fact, voters often judge a candidate more on his personal definition of “faith” than on the substance of his policies (notice we never had a President Kerry). Either way, it’s not exactly politically gallant to say you’re a proud Christian, especially considering the current President has done the same.
…but you don’t need to be in the pew every Sunday to know there’s something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can’t openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school.
Excuse me? Easy there, Mr. Non-Sequitur. Maybe I’m missing the contrast, but how exactly are these two things similar, other than the fact that Rick Perry is mad about both of them? With a dehydrated, gaffe-induced campaign, Perry is lobbing the most logically asinine Hail Mary pass possible to social conservatives.
As President, I’ll end Obama’s war on religion.
Well that just doesn’t exist. I suspect he wanted to invoke the President’s name purely for its visceral effect on most Republicans. Perhaps he actually intended to direct this comment towards Mitt Romney. If that’s the case, this is really more about Perry’s war on a specific religion, Mormonism. Hint: Romney ain’t a real Christian, y’all.
And I’ll fight against liberal attacks on our religious heritage.
See Fox’s War on Christmas for more on this story.
Faith made America strong. It can make her strong again.
America’s ability to issue the world’s reserve currency and economically rejuvenate post-WWII Europe made her pretty strong too. But fine, I’ll give you this one. You’ve gotta have faith!
